In November 2017 an Italian DX pedition has activated with the call J5T the island of Bubaque, reference IOTA AF-020, one of the hundreds islands of the Bijagos archipelago a few miles from the coast of Guinea Bissau to which they belong territorially. The team consisted of: I1HJT Alfeo, I2YSB Silvano, IK2CIO Vinicio, IK2CKR Angelo, IK2DIA Marcello, IK2HKT Stefano, IK2RZP Gino. Many radio amateurs and SWL have had the opportunity to work simultaneously with an IOTA reference and a country of uncommon activation. Supported by a robust technical and logistic organization, the team have worked unceasingly in all modes and all bands. The tracks we record here are SSB on 18 MHz and RTTY on 20 meters.
Guinea-Bissau is a small state of West Africa. Like many other states in that region, Guinea Bissau has a colonial past related to the slave trade. The territory was occupied by the Portuguese until 1973 and was the first territory of the Portuguese colonial Africa to obtain independence even before the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which with the return of democracy also put an end to Portuguese colonialism in Africa.
