RADIO VERITAS ASIA, PICTURES FROM THE CONFERENCE OF BAHARAMPUR

In 1970 Pope Paul VI inaugurated RVA in Manila with these words: "This great enterprise and such an important work should echo the teachings of Christ and lift hearts to God's truth and love." Pope John Paul II’s visit to the station in 1981 yet again sealed the relevance of the shortwave station for the Church's task of evangelization by his description of RVA as the "voice of Asian Christianity." And in "Ecclesia in Asia," the Pope in 1999 referred to Radio Veritas as an "excellent instrument of mission."  Altro grande nome legato a questa emittente è quello del Cancelliere tedesco Konrad Adenauer che, come ricorda ancora  il sito,  fin dal 1960 fu un grande sponsor di questa iniziativa:  "God’s generosity was experienced in realizing this project because the German Church came forward to help the Asian Bishops to great dream. On October 11, 1960, Conference, the Chancellor of Germany, Konrad Adenauer committed in realizing this dream project of Radio Veritas Asia. On the part of the Church, the following promised financial support: the Propagation of the Faith; the Bishops’ Conference of Germany; the Archdiocese of Cologne; the mission aid societies Missio, Misereor, Aid to the Church in Need, and the Holy Childhood Association."

The station was officially inaugurated in Manila, Philippine Islands by Pope Paul VI during his famous voyage of 1970 when it also suffered a foiled attempt on his life by Monsignor Marcinkus. The opening is also remembered by the issuer's site with these words: In 1970 Pope Paul VI in Manila Inaugurated RVA with these words: "This great enterprise and such an important work Should echo the teachings of Christ and lift hearts to God's truth and I love. ITALIAN PEOPLE FOR AFRICA. 5H3MB FROM BRESCIA TO TANZANIA

Until a few years ago the missionaries, often engaged in inaccessible areas and difficult to access, they had a unique way of communicating quickly with the outside world: the radio. Through shortwave radio they maintained contact with the places of origin, with the seats of the organizations from which depended the Mission and the civil and military institutions to handle emergencies. The figure of the missionary / Amateur Radio is very common to find in the civil or religious missions around the world and despite the advent of satellite technology and the Internet this figure is still widespread because the missionaries almost always have to operate in areas almost completely lacking in infrastructure and in these situations the radio is still the most important tool to handle emergencies. Summarizing: where there is a Mission there is also a short-wave radio ready to be used in various ways. In the rare free moments missionaries become enablers "in loco" of Countries not easy to listen to the ups and batteries for the contacts are always crowded. To take care of confirmation is usually a ham at home and manages the increasingly numerous requests arriving after the QSO. In recent years we are increasingly spreading the figure of cooperating volunteer who devoted part or all of his vacation by going free of charge at the missions helping the missionaries in the management of the structures created by them. And it is with great pride that we can say that many of these people are Italian. If the volunteer is also a ham radio in his spare time he also becomes an activator and of course in these cases contact requests are not lacking. And 'one of these figures that relates an interesting listening to this morning when on 18139 KHz began to spread its signal the 5H3MB station operator Maurizio (Italian call IK2GZU) from Cologne, province of Brescia, its yet another journey of solidarity with Ilembula, Njombe Region in the south central Tanzania. With the amateur bands occupied by a contest and a  swinging propagation situation , Maurizio began broadcasting in mid-morning with his Yaesu FT-100 on the WARC band of 18 MHz with a hardly resounding signal but sometimes good enough. Many contact requests from Italy and other countries. According to his Maurizio web page will remain in Tanzania until next April 12, so there will be other opportunities for contact.

PALAU, HOTEL WITH (LITTLE) VIEW AND RADIO ROOM

Koror, le antenne del VIP Guest Hotel

Akira

The Republic of Palau is a small sovereign state whose territory consists of 250 small islands that are part of the vast western macro-region of the Pacific known as Micronesia. Radio fans know this place especially for the religious radio station presence T8WH, World Harvest Radio, emanation of WHRI mother station for Asia and Oceania. Last weekend, in the early afternoon instead listened with a discrete signal, how can you listen to the recorded clip, the amateur radio station  T88MZ op. Akira on the frequency of 14250 KHz  on the band of 20 meters. Controlling the call on QRZ. com I found that Akira was operating from the radio room of a hotel in Koror, the VIP Guest Hotel, which while not offering a breathtaking view on 'ocean and a rather anonymous design, offers its guests with amateur radio license a powerful radio station through which you can activate the country T8 with reference IOTA OC009. The room cost is about $ 60 a night. Of course, since the discrete traffic at the time of booking you have to check that the radio room has already been reserved for some other guest. Sliding on the internet I found out that there are several witnesses, including several videos on youtube, witnessing a remarkable amateur radio activities by VIP Guest Hotel in Koror. As far as we see from the testimonials on the net the hotel is frequented mostly by Japanese operators although there are testimonies of some Italian operator arrived at the time of these distant islands.

STORIE DI RADIO DI GIOACHINO LANOTTE, IL COMMENTO DI ANDREA LAWENDEL

Andrea Lawendel

AUDIOCLIP WMLK BETHEL PENNSYLVANIA 9275 KHz

"WMLK Radio has been broadcasting fulltime since 1985. We began Short-wave broadcasting using a RCA BTA-50G, which was modified to accommodate the Short-wave frequency spectrum. This 50KW unit has brought in response from all the major continents of the world. Currently we are sending communications to over 125 counties. The need to cover our target areas with a stronger signal became apparent after we were broadcasting for several years. Recently we have purchased a BBC 250KW unit to enhance the outreach of WMLK Radio. This unit is now installed at our WMLK Radio site. We will begin using this unit very shortly so look at our time and frequency page for this important information. We hope you will enjoy listening to WMLK Radio! You will also find this site will link to the Assemblies of Yahweh website and our other new website The Sacred Name Broadcaster website as well! So please enjoy the productions of these three websites from the headquarters of this ministry located in Bethel, PA 19507."

"The Engineer has visited WMLK Radio and continued his upgrading process. Changing the Analog circuitry to Digital circuitry components in many critical areas of the TX operations. Many of the components (analog) were old and outdated. This caused many failures in the operational processes of the TX. The streamlining of critical circuitry has resulted in increased performance. The audio has improved as well as the efficiency of the TX since updates were added.
Also, the meter monitors that the Engineer has installed to date, allows internal viewing of each stage of operation to be seen while the TX is operational. Usually to see these readings required the use of testing equipment while the set was off or in a semi-operational mode. This has made the monitoring much easier.
The Engineer came right after knee replacement surgery. Although he was in recovery and pain, he set that aside and worked very diligently to improve the TX. He, like many in this profession are labeled, (what is called/known as, "old school"), pushed through his affliction and made the improvements! We are grateful for his diligence! We look forward to his return visit!
Thanks to each and every one who supports this outreach".

VATICAN RADIO SAVE THE TRANSMISSIONS TO ASIA AND AFRICA

At least for the current year the feared abandonment of short-wave bands of Vatican Radio will not be. According to  from the HFCC provisional schedule A17 which will take effect in late March, the Vatican broadcaster will focus its activities and liturgical information on shortwave to Africa, middle and Far East through the main site of Santa Maria Galeria and Madagascar relay stations, Tinang. Palauig, Tinian Island and Greenville. To the Europe are provided only liturgical broadcasts in Romanian and Ukrainian. Two in the Italian language broadcasts: from 6.00 to 6.15 on 15595 kHz and from 12 to 12.20 on 17520 and 17590 kHz. As the Vatican broadcaster has long been known is aiming particularly on new technologies, satellite and the internet to spread their emssaggio, focusing to a sotanzioso budget savings. Pretty dramatic few months ago the sudden shutdown of the historical frequency of 585 KHz which served with excellent signal the metropolitan area of Rome and the Lazio region. With the changing of the leadership  of the Vatican media's the hypothesis of shortwave shutdown it became more and more concrete arousing apprehension and perplexity of the Catholic circles of the developing countries that were seen deprived of an important means of spreading the Catholic message , especially in the face of a massive presence of evangelical broadcasters on shortwave they not want to give up and that, indeed, strengthen the presence of these broadcasting bands rightly considered strategic in places where new technologies still do not enjoy widespread use. Different sensibility had instead proved the SECAM Symposium of African bishops who recently drafted a joint document by asking the issuer's top management not to proceed with the closure of the service on short wave to Africa as most of the regular listeners of the transmissions  not been able to follow the broadcasts they do not have the new digital technologies which link from Oltretevere. Request that, at least for now, seems to be upheld, given that the service still provides transmissions in major African languages. A17 are also present in the schedule transmissions in major Asian languages and the Middle East. This makes COMPLETE SCHEDULE PERIOD A17 of Vatican Radio.

THAILAND: THE GREAT REFUSAL OF THE BBC

The BBC World Service has stopped broadcasting from one of its major global transmission stations situated in Thailand, AFP has learned, after talks broke down with a junta riled by its uncensored coverage.Sources with knowledge of the negotiations said the BBC's Thai-language output was an obstacle in discussions about renewing the 20-year lease on the complex, one of the network's main shortwave broadcast stations for Asia. The suspension comes as the World Service rolls out its largest foreign-language expansion for decades. The centre's large red and white transmission towers in Nakhon Sawan 150 miles (240 kilometres) north of Bangkok beamed local language news into tightly-controlled countries such as China and North Korea, and into places where many still rely on radio like Pakistan and AfghanistanBut it went off air on January 1 following the expiry of the lease. "Despite extensive negotiations, we have been unable to reach an agreement to re-commence transmissions," the BBC said in a statement. The BBC World Service, part-funded by the British government but editorially independent, currently produces uncensored news in 29 languages. The Asia transmission station moved to Thailand from Hong Kong in 1997 after the city was handed back to China. The BBC did not give details of why the talks broke down. But two sources said its Thai-language service had become a sore point. Thailand's royalist establishment was incensed by a profile of new King Maha Vajiralongkorn which the BBC Thai service published following the October death of his father King Bhumibol Adulyadej
- Unvarnished reporting - Thailand's monarchy is protected from scrutiny by a ferociously enforced lese majeste law, forcing media inside the kingdom to heavily self-censor. The unvarnished profile was published out of the BBC's London office. It went viral in a country unused to seeing unfiltered reporting of its monarchy. A dissident student leader was charged with royal defamation for sharing the profile, the first prosecution under Vajiralongkorn's reign. Sansern Kaewkumnerd, head of Thailand's government Public Relations Department, confirmed discussions had faltered but did not say why. "It is still unclear whether the contract would be extended or not extended," he said. But foreign ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee said there were "no sticking points" and that the BBC had made a "unilateral decision to terminate the negotiating process without consulting the Thai side". Thailand's 2014 coup brought to power a group of ultra-royalist generals who stamped down on dissent and cramped media freedoms. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a Thai politics expert at Chulalongkorn University, said Thailand had become a "more problematic place for media companies", a trend that has worsened under the latest military government. "The longer the military regime is entrenched, the more damage we'll see to basic Thai freedoms," he said. It its statement the BBC said it had been able to absorb the fallout of the closed Thai station by "transmitting non-English services via shortwave from other locations". Within Asia, the network owns transmission sites in Singapore and Oman. The timing of the closure comes as the World Service plans to increase its output to 40 foreign languages, near its post-World War II peak of 45. After years of slashing funding, the British government announced an additional $352 million for the 2015-2020 period. The move was partly a response to the huge expansion of state-sponsored media competitors in countries like Russia, China and the Middle East. The extra money is aimed at increasing local-language broadcasts to countries like North Korea, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Russia. The cash injection also went towards hiring extra BBC Thai staff, both in Bangkok and London.

QSL CARD FROM II0IADC SPECIAL CALL DEDICATED TO THE ADMIRAL AGOSTINO STRAULINO
