WIKIRADIO: ANDREA BORGNINO RICORDA RADIO CAROLINE

RAI RECALLS THE BEGINNING OF THE TRANSMISSIONS OF RADIO CAROLINE

"At noon on March 28, 1964, Chris Moore and Simon Dee were on a ship off the coast of Essex, south-east England, and announced the start of broadcasts from MV Caroline - an old Danish passenger ship - sending airing a pre-recorded message: "This is Radio Caroline on 199, your 24-hour music station." The first song that was aired was Not Fade Away by the Rolling Stones, dedicated to Ronan O'Rahilly. start the broadcasts of what would become one of the first "pirate radios" in the world and certainly the most famous, whose story inspired the famous movie I Love Radio Rock of 2009. "

(Huffington Post)

Fifty-five years after the first broadcast, Italian radio also recalls this original communicative experience, a product of the innovative climate of the 60s. On Thursday March 28th at 2.00 pm RAI Radiotre, as part of the daily "Wikiradio", will remember this event.

AUDIOCLIP: CARILLON WELLBEING RADIO 1476 KHz RECEIVED IN CENTRAL ITALY

Hermitage FM and Carillon Radio are both part of Carillon Broadcasting Ltd. As broadcasters our history starts way back on Sunday, 11th April 1976 when as a fledgling hospital radio station we opened as Loughborough Hospital Broadcasting. Our programming in those days was put out live over an internal speaker system to the Loughborough General Hospital, Regent Street and Zachery Merton in Loughborough.
Our service continued pretty much unchanged until 1999 when our station took the bold step of applying to broadcast on medium wave. For a small town based hospital broadcaster the decision to take this route was both daring and innovative. Following a change of name to Carillon Radio in November of that year, the license was granted in 2000 and we became the smallest hospital radio station in the country to be afforded this status.
With ageing broadcast equipment and still based above Loughborough General Hospital’s X-Ray department, the race was on to bring ourselves into the 21st Century and commence our new broadcast service. By this time we were providing programming to the Loughborough General Hospital and Loughborough Hospital on Epinal Way, the other 2 locations having long since been closed. With the odds stacked against us, on a limited budget, doing all of the work ourselves, digging ditches, laying cables, building our own equipment and erecting aerial masts, we achieved the impossible. We launched our new 24-hour broadcasting service on Saturday, 9th December 2000 on 1386 AM from our old but valiant studios.
New challenges and opportunities were to follow. The closure of Loughborough General Hospital meant a relocation to Loughborough Hospital – no easy task as the whole process was to start again. New ditches were dug, new cables laid and aerial masts erected, all on the slimmest of budgets. Despite major setbacks we achieved the impossible for a second time and we came back on air stronger than ever with renewed vigor and a vastly improved range of programming.
Our efforts were not to go unnoticed and within months we had been invited to expand our broadcasting to Coalville Hospital. Even more digging of ditches, laying of cables and aerials being erected our service was launched to a whole new audience in Coalville. More was to follow with our further expansion in to Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Oakham hospitals – more ditches, cables and aerials and even a second medium wave frequency.
So to the present, with our committed expansion and growth and with a wealth of experience behind us, we have been granted an even greater honour – to be the first hospital broadcaster in the country to become a Community radio station. Still undertaking all of the work ourselves we are now ready to bring to you our new service, Hermitage FM.
We are committed to providing a first rate service to the people of North West Leicestershire on Hermitage FM and also to the people of Loughborough, Coalville, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Oakham on our sister station, Carillon Radio. We are a community broadcaster where your community matters and we provide the voice of your community. With studios in Coalville, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Ibstock , we aim to entertain, provide well-being and community support both on and off air. We are here to serve you and make the difference to your community. These are just some of the ways that we are doing that – outside broadcasting, youth opportunities, educational training, etc…

HAARP: NEW PROJECT ON AIR FROM MARCH 25-28

From March 25 - 28 Concordia University's Amanda Dawn Christie will meld art and science at HAARP. She plans to use the world’s most capable high-power, high-frequency transmitter to send art around the world and into outer space

In the shadow of Mount Sanford, surrounded by Alaskan wilderness, you’ll find the most powerful radio transmitter on earth.
With 180 antennas spread across 33 acres, the HAARP (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program) facility is one-of-a-kind.
It was designed by the United States military, and transferred in 2015 to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, to study the powerful potential of the ionosphere — an electrically charged layer of the earth’s atmosphere.
On this remote site, scientists use a unique tool called the Ionospheric Research Instrument (IRI) to create radio-induced aurora, also known as airglow. But it’s never been used by a Canadian artist to transmit art — until now.
The IRI’s man-made northern lights inspired interdisciplinary artist Amanda Dawn Christie to create Ghosts in the Air Glow: an upcoming transmission art project that will use the IRI to play with the liminal boundaries of outer space.
“I was so fascinated by these airglow experiments — and the relationship between the ionosphere and radio communications — I felt compelled to create an artwork specific to the site and its history,” says Christie, assistant professor in Concordia’s Department of Studio Arts.

She will be embedding her own encoded SSTV images, audio compositions and propagation tests into IRI experiments from March 25 to 28.
“The facility, which was used by the military, has an air of mystery about it and has been the subject of many conspiracy theories over the years — that’s something I reflected upon when creating the piece.”
Ghosts in the Air Glow will consist of an hour-long transmission containing eight movements, each created for a specific frequency and intended to explore different concepts related to radio science and the HAARP site itself.
From Arctic wolves meeting the aurora to poetic texts written in Morse code and the NATO phonetic alphabet, the motifs covered by this transmission art work address issues related to military research, surveillance, political territories, ionospheric science, and conspiracy theories.

Embedding ‘ghosts’ into the airwaves

The common thread weaving each segment together is the idea of the “ghosts,” or rather the esoteric activity that inhabits our airwaves, says Christie.
She explains that when radio was first discovered in the 1800s, spiritualist movements of the era believed the souls of the dead occupied the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum.
“Radio communications are all around; they’re an invisible force constantly moving through us. I liked the connection made by 19th-century spiritualists between matter, energy and EM waves on both a poetic and metaphorical level,” Christie adds.
“By embedding images and sounds into the airglow, I’m also in a way embedding my own ‘ghosts’ into the EM spectrum, an unseen yet highly active realm.”

Space: a meeting ground for art and science

The idea for the project came about when Christie met Christopher Fallen, the chief scientist at HAARP, at a hackers conference earlier this year. Fallen, who is an amateur radio operator, was intrigued by Christie’s proposition to use the IRI to create site-specific transmission art.
He agreed to open the facility to her, and when she gained backing from the Canada Council for the ArtsGhosts in the Air Glow officially became the first Canadian-funded project to take place at HAARP.
“Art and science are often seen as separate efforts but they actually share many of the same inspirations and techniques. I’m excited to see HAARP, a unique scientific instrument, used for a comparably unique artistic performance,” says Fallen.
“Amanda’s project will be a valuable contribution to the 50-year collection of scientific work in the field of ionosphere radio modification, and also to the brand new collection of artistic work using powerful high-frequency radio transmitters and the upper atmosphere — it’s art directed from the ground but created in space!”
Ghosts in the Air Glow will transmit one hour per day between March 25 and 28 and will be received and decoded by amateur radio operators with both traditional analogue and software-defined radio equipment across the world. However, for those among us who aren’t radio experts, the transmission will also be streamed live online.
Stay tuned!

Radio Roma Capitale is a local station that operates on 93 MHz. With an average audience of over 40 thousand daily listeners, it is in a good position in the ranking of local broadcasters in the eternal city. The programming of this broadcaster relies heavily on local information, which is very demanding in a complex reality such as the Roman one.

The social aspect is particularly taken care of by Radio Roma Capitale which combines the traditional daily programming with a night band entirely dedicated to stories and interviews that are also spread through the various web platforms. The structure that deals with the production of this particular segment of programming and that we visited yesterday afternoon, is located in the southern part of the capital, in the Romanina commercial area, in a low gray building on Via Stoppato which also houses a small but interesting radio museum where people are waiting for the interview. As soon as you arrive, you immediately proceed to reading and signing the disclaimers, after which a briefing with an editor prepares the interview itself. In the structure there are 3 workstations with as many speakers working simultaneously in what is a real assembly line.

The interviews last about 8 minutes and are also filmed in video which will serve as a basis for editing for the subsequent dissemination of the interview via the web. Already a few minutes after the end of the interview the videos are available on the numerous terminals present in the structure and immediately viewable by the interested parties. Generally the interview airing takes place 3-4 weeks after registration. Very interesting is the human variety that can be found in this environment of which we have some photos, both of the workstations and of the exhibition space, ranging from the professional clown to the group of professionals associated in the launch of a restaurant through the blogger. So many faces, so many stories, so much humanity that only the radio can offer.
