SOUTH GEORGIA. FDC RADIO MAST, KING EDWARD POINT 1940s

Atlantico Meridionale. Ancora più a sud delle Isole Falkland ci sono l'isola di South Georgia e l'arcipelago delle Sandwich Australi, una vera e propria anticamera del continente antartico. L'isola principale dell'arcipelago è un groviglio di montagne scoscese con 12 cime che superano i 2000 metri di quota. Occupata dagli inglesi nel corso del 1700 è stata utilizzata principalmente come base di rifornimento per le baleniere operanti in quel settore oceanico. Nel 1916 Ernest Shackleton, dopo una memorabile traversata di 1600 Km da Elephant island, riuscì ad arrivare qui e organizzare una spedizione di soccorso che permise di salvare tutti gli uomini della nave Endurance rimasti li bloccati dopo il naufragio della nave. Nei primi anni 80, in concomitanza della guerra delle Falkland, anche quest'isola venne occupata per alcuni mesi dall'esercito argentino. L'isola ospita attualmente una base scientifica che si occupa di studi antartici. Negli anni 40 esisteva una stazione radio che pernetteva i collegamenti a lunga distanza con i navigli in transito e con la lontana Inghilterra. Questa stazione è stata commemorata nel 1994 con una busta filatelica che riproduce il traliccio d'antenna di King Edward Point negli anni 40 con annullo filatelico su una serie di francobolli dedicati alle comunicazioni. Uno di questi francobolli riproduce l'interno di una stazione radio con un operatore al lavoro. Si tratta di un arrivo odierno, ultimo acquisto della mia piccola raccolta radio filatelica.

South Atlantic. Further south of the Falkland Islands are the island of South Georgia and the South Sandwich archipelago, a real antechamber of the Antarctic continent. The main island of the archipelago is a tangle of steep mountains with 12 peaks that exceed 2000 meters in altitude. Occupied by the British during the 1700s, it was mainly used as a supply base for whalers operating in that ocean sector. In 1916 Ernest Shackleton, after a memorable 1600 km crossing from Elephant Island, managed to arrive here and organize a rescue expedition that allowed to save all the men of the Endurance ship who were stranded there after the shipwreck. In the early 80s, coinciding with the Falklands war, this island was also occupied for a few months by the Argentine army. The island currently hosts a scientific base dealing with Antarctic studies. In the 40s there was a radio station that connected long-distance connections with the ships in transit and with distant England. This station was commemorated in 1994 with a philatelic envelope reproducing the antenna pylon of King Edward Point in the 1940s with postmark on a series of postage stamps dedicated to communications. One of these stamps reproduces the interior of a radio station with an operator at work. This is today's arrival, the last purchase of my small philatelic radio collection.
