RADIO MONTE CARLO. VINTAGE STICKER

 

Premetto che non sono un collezionista di adesivi. Non mi sono mai dedicato alla ricerca sistematica di questi gadget ma nel corso di lunghi anni di radioascolto mi è capitato di entrare in possesso  di un centinaio di esemplari,  tenuti più o meno alla rinfusa.  Qualche tempo fa ho deciso di raccoglierne alcuni in un quadro poster per la mia modesta "parete dei trofei" e altri in un raccoglitore. Oggi invece rimettendo in ordine nella mia collezione di cartine geografiche me ne è capitata una sotto mano sulla quale in altri tempi segnavo con un pennarello le nazioni che riuscivo ad ascoltare in radio (ma questa sarà l'oggetto di un prossimo post). Attaccato con del nastro adesivo ai bordi della cartina c'era questo adesivo di Radio Monte Carlo risalente, presumo, alla fine degli anni 70. Se non ricordo male RMC in quel periodo trasmetteva sui 701 KHz e rispose con una lettera (purtroppo perduta) e qualche adesivo. Alcuni li regalai ad amici che li mettevano sulle auto (allora usava cosi), mentre questo, finì sulla mappa degli ascolti saltando fuori a più di 40 anni di distanza. 

I'm not a sticker collector. I have never dedicated myself to the systematic research of these gadgets but in the course of long years of radio listening I have come into possession of more or less a hundred kept more or less in bulk. Some time ago I decided to collect some of them in a poster painting for my modest "trophy wall" and others in a binder. Today, however, tidying up my collection of geographical maps, I came across one on which in other times I used to mark with a marker the nations I could hear on the radio (but this will be the subject of a future post). Attached with tape to the edges of the map was this Radio Monte Carlo sticker dating back, I assume, to the late 70s. If I remember correctly RMC was broadcasting on 701 KHz at that time and replied with a letter (unfortunately lost) and some stickers. Some I gave to friends who put them on cars (that was the custom at the time), while this one ended up on the ratings map popping up more than 40 years later.

OTTAViO CAPOZIO IL RADIOTELEGRAFISTA UCCISO ALLE FOSSE ARDEATINE

Ottavio Capozio era nato a Roma il 20 settembre 1922. Impiegato postale presso l'Ufficio della Regia Ferrovia, nel 1943 aderì al PCI della sezione di Tor Pignattara (Cellula capo Squadra Bellardini). Durante l'occupazione nazifascista e tramite il fratello Luigi entrò in contatto con il nucleo comunista di Belardino Nuccitelli, capo squadra del Gruppo Postelegrafonico presso l'Ufficio espressi di Roma Ferrovia, entrando così nel Movimento Comunista d'Italia. Ottavio Capozio svolgeva diverse attività di sabotaggio: presso gli uffici di smistamento postale sottraeva la corrispondenza ai comandi germanici e alla Gestapo di Roma per informare i compagni denunciati; nel quartiere di Tor Pignattara invece collaborava con il cognato Domenico Polli (aderente al Partito Socialista Italiano) come informatore per la Va Armata americana dei transiti di mezzi corazzati tedeschi sulla via Casilina diretti al fronte di Cassino. Inoltre era fornitore di armi, soprattutto di fattura americana e inglese, ai propri compagni di Bandiera Rossa.Durante una riunione clandestina nel bar caffè Tosoni di via Appia Nuova, Ottavio Capozio venne arrestato il 12 marzo 1944, insieme al cognato e ai suoi compagni del Gruppo Postelegrafonico. Venne brutalmente torturato a via Tasso e fucilato insieme al cognato presso le Fosse Ardeatine il 24 marzo 1944.

Ottavio Capozio was born in Rome on 20 September 1922. A postal employee at the Regia Ferrovia office, in 1943 he joined the PCI of the Tor Pignattara section (Cellula capo Squadra Bellardini). During the Nazi-Fascist occupation and through his brother Luigi, he came into contact with the communist nucleus of Belardino Nuccitelli, team leader of the Post and Telegraph Group at the Express Office of Rome Railway, thus joining the Movimento Comunista d'Italia. Ottavio Capozio carried out various sabotage activities: at the postal sorting offices he stole correspondence from the German commands and the Gestapo in Rome to inform the reported comrades; in the Tor Pignattara district, on the other hand, he collaborated with his brother-in-law Domenico Polli (adherent to the Italian Socialist Party) as an informant for the Vath American Army of the transits of German armored vehicles on the Via Casilina headed for the Cassino front. Furthermore, he was a supplier of arms, especially of American and English manufacture, to his Red Banner comrades. During a clandestine meeting in the Tosoni coffee bar in via Appia Nuova, Ottavio Capozio was arrested on 12 March 1944, together with his brother-in-law and his comrades from the Postelegrafonico group. He was brutally tortured in via Tasso and shot together with his brother-in-law at the Fosse Ardeatine on March 24, 1944.

VATICAN RADIO: THE SITE OF SANTA MARIA GALERIA

 

Il centro trasmittente della Radio Vaticana di Santa Maria Galeria è stato inaugurato nel 1957 da Papa Pio XII ed è ancora il cuore pulsante dell'emittente vaticana che pur avendo dismesso le onde medie ed utilizzando tutti i più moderni mezzi di comunicazione analogici e digitali ha mantenuto questo imponente (e costoso) impianto trasmittente su onde corte che diffonde il messaggio vaticano in tutto il mondo attraverso il semplice utilizzo le comuni radio domestiche. Certo, le trasmissioni attraverso le onde corte hanno subito nel corso degli anni un notevole ridimensionamento e una decina di anni fa sembrava che anche il destino di questo sito fosse segnato, ma, a quanto pare, è stato proprio l'avvento al soglio pontificio di Papa Francesco che, almeno per ora, ne ha scongiurato la chiusura, Nonostante la capillare diffusione di internet attraverso la telefonia mobile si è voluta mantenere la possibilità di far ascoltare la Radio Vaticana anche in quelle zone e sono ancora tante, dove le moderne tecnologie digitali non sono ancora fruibili. Il sito trasmittente è ubicato a ridosso della via Braccianense, strada che conduce a suggestivi siti artistici, storici e paesaggistici immediatamente a nord dell'area metropolitana di Roma. Fermarsi in quel punto non è semplice perchè la sede stradale è piuttosto stretta in rapporto all' intenso traffico automibilisto che la caratterizza, tuttavia il modo per fermarmi e parcheggiare in relativa sicurezza lo abbiamo trovato e cosi abbiamo potuto dedicare un paio di minuti a fatografare ciò che è possibile vedere dalla strada. Purtroppo il cielo era a dir poco plumbeo e questo è il misero risultato risultato di questa sosta. 

The transmitting center of Vatican Radio in Santa Maria Galeria was inaugurated in 1957 by Pope Pius XII and is still the beating heart of the Vatican broadcaster which, despite having abandoned medium waves and using all the most modern analogue and digital means of communication, has maintained this impressive (and expensive) short-wave broadcasting system that spreads the Vatican message all over the world through the simple use of ordinary domestic radios. Of course, shortwave transmissions have undergone a considerable downsizing over the years and about ten years ago it seemed that the fate of this site was also sealed, but, apparently, it was precisely the advent to the papal throne of Pope Francis who, at least for now, has averted its closure, Despite the widespread diffusion of the internet through mobile telephony, it was decided to maintain the possibility of making Vatican Radio listen to even in those areas and there are still many, where modern digital technologies they are not usable yet. The transmitting site is located close to the via Braccianense, a road that leads to suggestive artistic, historical and landscape sites immediately north of the metropolitan area of Rome. Stopping at that point is not easy because the roadway is rather narrow in relation to the intense car traffic that characterizes it, however we found a way to stop and park in relative safety and so we were able to spend a couple of minutes photographing what which you can see from the street. Unfortunately the sky was leaden to say the least and this is the poor result of this stop.

QSL FROM RADIO ROSSIi 999 KHz (THE FIRST TRANSMISSION IN MEDIUM WAVES IN 2022)

 

Più o meno un anno fa, dopo un paio di mesi dall'inizio della guerra in Ucraina la Russia è tornata attiva sulle onde medie con la sua emittente di Stato Radio Rossi. Le trasmissioni sono iniziate nella serata del 5 aprile 2022 sulla frequenza dei 999 KHz dal sito trasmittente di Grigoriopol/Maiac nella Transnistria, la regione orientale moldava ai confini occidentali dell'Ucraina che ha dichiarato unilaterlamente la propria indipendenza molti anni fa ma che è di fatto controllata dal Governo di Mosca. La proprietà del sito è interamente russa che lo affitta al network religioso TWR che però è stato "sfrattato" dai 999 KHz per rispondere all'analoga mossa del governo ucraino che aveva ripristinato a sua volta le trasmissioni in onde medie già pochi giorni dopo l'inizio delle ostilità. E' stata una gran sorpresa, lo scorso anno, ascoltare sui 999 KHz prima una trasmissione in russo nella quale si parlava di balletti, spettacoli e colonne sonore cinematografiche e al termine l'identificazione "Radio Rossii" seguita da inno nazionale e notiziario. Vani i tentativi di contatto con l'emittente in quei giorni convulsi, mentre da qualche tempo le pagine che si occupano di conferme e QSL riportano le risposte per email di un QSL-MANAGER che risponde al nome di Andrey Molokov che secondo il timbro riportato sulla conferma risponde dalla Oblast di Leningradskaya, ovvero la regione che ha come centro principale San Pietroburgo. Ho quindi inviato un rapporto di ascolto sia all'indirizzo riportato sulla QSL rtrn@rtnr.ru che a quello diretto del manager andrey_hamradio@mail.ru. Proprio da questo indirizzo ho ricevuto la QSL elettronica che vedete pubblicata e che riporta sia l'intestazione della radio e tv russa che quella del sito trasmittente in Transnistria. Tempo di conferma circa 3 giorni.

 

More or less a year ago, a couple of months after the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia returned to medium-wave broadcasting with its state broadcaster Radio Rossi. Transmissions began on the evening of 5 April 2022 on the 999 KHz frequency from the Grigoriopol/Maiac transmitting site in Transnistria, the eastern Moldavian region on the western borders of Ukraine which unilaterally declared its independence many years ago but which is in fact controlled by the Moscow government. The property of the site is wholly Russian, which leases it to the religious network TWR which, however, was "evicted" from 999 KHz in response to a similar move by the Ukrainian government which had in turn restored medium wave broadcasts just a few days after the start of hostilities. It was a great surprise, last year, to first listen on 999 KHz to a broadcast in Russian in which we spoke of ballets, shows and film soundtracks and at the end the identification "Radio Rossii" followed by the national anthem and newscast. The attempts to contact the issuer in those turbulent days were in vain, while for some time now the pages dealing with confirmations and QSL cards have been reporting the email responses of a QSL-MANAGER who answers to the name of Andrey Molokov who, according to the stamp on the confirmation responds from the Leningradskaya Oblast, i.e. the region whose main center is St. Petersburg. I then sent a listening report to both the QSL address rtrn@rtnr.ru and to manager andrey_hamradio@mail.ru's direct address. It was from this address that I received the electronic QSL that you see published and which bears both the heading of the Russian radio and TV and that of the transmitting site in Transnistria. Confirmation time around 3 days.

THE RADIO WAR ON THE 38TH PARALLEL. ECHO OF HOPE AND JAMMING ON 6250 KHz

A pensarci bene la guerra di Corea (1950-53) non è stata mai ufficialmente chiusa. Da 70 anni i due Stati della penisola coreana vivono una lunga tregua nel corso della quale non sono mancati momenti di grande tensione e incidenti sulla linea del 38° parallelo che hanno fatto temere una ripresa delle ostilità nella regione. Due governi e due sistemi politici agli antipodi si osservano in cagnesco e si sfidano facendo la voce grossa a vari livelli, almeno fino a questo momento. Una Guerra Fredda locale che continua senza esclusione di colpi e con tutti i mezzi a disposizione, compresa la propaganda radiofonica. Da nord e da sud le trasmissioni dei due Stati si incrociano senza soluzione di continuità e naturalmente anche il jamming a cui eravamo abituati ai tempi della contrapposizione dei blocchi fa parte di questa battaglia delle idee. La Corea del Sud trasmette, o almeno ci prova, verso il nord attraverso una serie di emittenti tra le quali una attivata dai servizi di intelligence denominata Echo of Hope. La risposta del nord è il classico jamming in stile cino-sovietico finalizzato ad evitarne l'ascolto. Grazie alla propagazione sulle onde corte gli echi di questa battaglia dell'etere arrivano anche qui in Europa dove si possono ascoltare sia le trasmissioni del sud che il jamming settentrionale. Una di queste frequenze è quella dei 6250 KHz che abbiamo monitorato questa sera intorno alle 19.00 UTC. Come potete ascoltare dal video che abbiamo realizzato, sulla frequenza nominale si ascolta solo il jamming e la trasmissione si ascolta con molta difficoltà nella modalità USB, mentre spostandoci in su di 4-5 KHz un debole segnale può essere ascoltato anche in AM. Echo of Hope dispone anche di diverse altre frequenze anch'esse sistematicamente oggetto di jamming. A volte, almeno qui in Europa si riesce ad ascoltare un buon segnale sui 4885 KHz.  Non sappiamo quanti in Corea del Nord siano in grado o abbiano il coraggio di ascoltare queste trasmissioni ma dal sud non demordono, questa ed altre emittenti trasmettono in continuazione verso il nord con la speranza che qualcosa del loro messaggio arrivi a destinazione.

ECHO OF HOPE AND JAMMING, 6250 KHz

Come to think of it, the Korean War (1950-53) was never officially ended. For 70 years, the two states of the Korean peninsula have experienced a long truce during which there have been moments of great tension and incidents on the line of the 38th parallel which have raised fears of a resumption of hostilities in the region. Two governments and two political systems at the antipodes observe each other askance and challenge each other by raising their voices at various levels, at least until now. A local Cold War that continues with no holds barred and with all the means available, including radio propaganda. From the north and from the south, the transmissions of the two states cross seamlessly and of course the jamming we were used to at the time of the opposition of the blocks is also part of this battle of ideas. South Korea transmits, or at least tries to, to the north through a series of transmitters including one activated by the intelligence services called Echo of Hope. The northern response is classic Sino-Soviet style jamming aimed at avoiding overhearing. Thanks to the propagation on short waves, the echoes of this battle of the ether also reach here in Europe where both the southern transmissions and the northern jamming can be heard. One of these frequencies is that of 6250 KHz which we monitored this evening around 19.00 UTC. As you can hear from the video we made, on the nominal frequency only jamming is heard and the transmission is very difficult to hear in USB mode, while moving up 4-5 KHz a weak signal can also be heard in AM. Echo of Hope also has several other frequencies that are also systematically jammed. Sometimes, at least here in Europe you can hear a good signal on 4885 KHz. We don't know how many in North Korea are able or have the courage to listen to these broadcasts but from the south they don't give up, this and other stations broadcast continuously to the north with the hope that something of their message will reach its destination.

HD8M FT8 FROM GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

 

L'arcipelago delle Galapagos, gruppo di isole situale a 1000 Km a ovest dalla costa dell'Ecuador, reso celebre dai resoconti di viaggio e dalle ricerche naturalistiche di Charles Darwin, è stato recente meta della spedizione Dx HD8M che ha operato dall'isola di Santa Cruz (ref. IOTA SA-004). Quasi 27000 i QSO nei vari modi, messi a log nei 10 giorni di permanenza nell'arcipelago. Nel (nostro) pomeriggio dell'11 marzo, ultimo giorno di permanenza sull'isola, ho avuto modo di ascoltare questa stazione in CW sui 28 MHz e in FT8 sui 21 MHz. Purtroppo non sono riuscito ad ascoltare collegamenti in fonia come era accaduto nel 2002, sempre sui 28 MHz. 

The Galapagos archipelago, a group of islands located 1000 km west of the coast of Ecuador, made famous by the travel reports and naturalistic research of Charles Darwin, was the recent destination of the Dx HD8M expedition which operated from the island of Santa Cruz (IOTA reference SA-004). Almost 27,000 QSOs in various modes, logged in the 10 days of stay in the archipelago. On (our) afternoon of March 11, last day of stay on the island, I was able to listen to this station in CW on 28 MHz and in FT8 on 21 MHz. Unfortunately I was unable to listen to phone connections as had happened in 2002, still on 28 MHz.

AUDIOCLIP, TRT RADYO 1 VIA IZMIR, 927 KHz

L'emittente pubblica turca TRT RADYO 1 (Radio Bir) trasmette dalle 3.00 alle 10.15 UTC sulla frequenza in onde medie dei 927 KHz attraverso il trasmettitore di 100 KW di potenza ubicato a Izmir. E' una stazione che mi capita spesso di monitorare tra le 5.00 e le 6.00 UTC e in questa fascia oraria si ascolta con un segnale di buona qualità. La programmazione mattutina (la Turchia è avanti di 2 ore rispetto a noi) è caratterizzata da notiziari, commenti e interviste. In data odierna, dopo il notiziario delle 6.00 è andata in onda una conversazione, o meglio un monologo, sulla vicenda dell'adesione alla NATO di Svezia e Finlandia, seguita dalla testimonianza, questa si davvero interessante di un responsabile dei soccorsi del dopo terremoto nel distretto di Elbistan. Nel video vi proponiamo invece il momento dell'annuncio di identificazione della stazione.

 

The Turkish public broadcaster TRT RADYO 1 (Radio Bir) broadcasts from 3.00 to 10.15 UTC on the medium wave frequency of 927 KHz through the 100 KW power transmitter located in Izmir. It is a station that I often monitor between 5.00 and 6.00 UTC and in this time slot it is listened to with a good quality signal. Morning programming (Turkey is 2 hours ahead of us) features news, commentary and interviews. Today, after the 6.00 newscast, a conversation, or rather a monologue, was broadcast on the matter of Sweden and Finland joining NATO, followed by the testimony, this is really interesting, of a post-earthquake relief manager in Elbistan district. In the video we propose instead the moment of the announcement of the identification of the station.

In altri tempi era difficile ascoltare stazioni di radioamatore dal Nepal, mentre negli ultimi anni ci sono state diverse attivazioni di questo Country che resta comunque un bottino ambito per i radioamatori di tutto il mondo, almeno a giudicare dal cospicuo pile up che ne corso della mattinata ha caratterizzato le chiamate dell'operatore Robert, di nazionalità slovena. L'apertura dei 10 metri in questi giorni sta offrendo davvero grandi possibilità di ascolto e di collegamento in tutto il mondo.

In other times it was difficult to listen to amateur radio stations from Nepal, while in recent years there have been several activations of this country which still remains a coveted booty for radio amateurs from all over the world, at least judging by the conspicuous pile up that took place during the morning featured calls from operator Robert, a Slovenian national. QSL FROM RUV 1 ICELAND, 189 KHz

 

Tre anni fa e solo per pochi minuti sono riuscito ad ascoltare il primo programma della radio pubblica islandese RUV RAS 1 (cosa tutt'altro che facile 60 Km a sud di Roma) trasmesso in onda lunga sui 189 KHz da  Gufuskàlar (Hellisandur). In quel momento era in onda un celebre pezzo per violoncello di Johann Sebastian Bach, riconoscibilissimo nonostante la bassa intensità del segnale. Compilato il relativo rapporto d'ascolto l'ho inviato a un indirizzo email trovato in rete senza ottenere risposta. Stesso risultato un anno dopo con un altro indirizzo. Ieri sera mi è capitato di trovare un nuovo indirizzo ed ho voluto tentare nuovamente. Evidentemente lo staff del direttore generale Stefàn Eiriksson, che ringrazio, ci tiene molto alle relazioni con il pubblico anche se "fuori target" e nel giro di 12 ore mi è arrivata questa breve email di conferma che riporta comunque i dati di ascolto. Purtroppo, almeno dal mio QTH non sono mai riuscito ad ascoltare i 207 KHz di cui abbiamo scritto nei giorni scorsi a causa della disattivazione e non avrò mai il piacere di una conferma su questa frequenza, ma accontentiamoci. Grazie RUV e grazie Maestro Johann Sebastian !

Three years ago and only for a few minutes I was able to listen to the first program of the Icelandic public radio RUV RAS  1 (not easy 60 Km south of Rome) broadcast on longwave on 189 KHz from Gufuskàlar (Hellisandur). At that moment a famous piece for cello by Johann Sebastian Bach was on the air, very recognizable despite the low signal intensity. Once I compiled the relative listening report, I sent it to an email address found on the net without getting a response. Same result a year later with another address. Last night I happened to find a new address and I wanted to try again. Evidently the staff of general manager Stefàn Eiriksson, whom I thank, cares a lot about relations with the public even if "off target" and within 12 hours I received this brief confirmation email which still shows the audience figures. Unfortunately, at least from my QTH I have never been able to listen to the 207 KHz we wrote about in recent days due to the deactivation and I will never have the pleasure of a confirmation on this frequency, but let's be satisfied. Thank you RUV and thank you Maestro Johann Sebastian !

LRA36 RADIO NACIONAL ARCANGEL SAN GABRIEL - IDENTIFICATION

RIKISUTVARPID, SHORTWAVES VINTAGE QSL CARD 11402 KHz

Negli anni 90 la radio nazionale islandese  (RUV) utilizzava le onde corte per consentire l'ascolto di notizie e  programmi  ai connazionali al lavoro sull'Oceano Atlantico. La frequenza utilizzata era quella degli 11402 KHz in banda laterale superiore. Il segnale era ricevibile anche qui in Italia e la redazione provvedeva a confermare i rapporti di ricezione in tempi abbastanza rapidi con suggestive cartoline QSL. Il servizio in onde corte non è più attivo da anni, mentre proprio in questi giorni la radio pubblica islandese è al centro delle cronache radiantistiche per la dismissione di uno dei due trasmettitori in onde lunghe che coprono l'impervia isola e una buona parte dell'oceano settentrionale. 

In the 90s, the Icelandic National Radio (RUV) used shortwave to allow fellow countrymen working on the Atlantic Ocean to hear news and programs. The frequency used was that of 11402 KHz in the upper sideband. The signal was also receivable here in Italy and the editorial staff confirmed the reception reports fairly quickly with suggestive QSL cards. The shortwave service hasn't been active for years, while in these days the Icelandic public radio is at the center of radio news due to the decommissioning of one of the two longwave transmitters that cover the impervious island and a good part of the northern ocean.

AUDIOCLIP, LRA36, THE RADIO AT THE END OF THE WORLD

 

Dal 1979 LRA36 RADIO NACIONAL "ARCANGEL SAN GABRIEL" fa ascoltare la sua voce dalla base Esperanza nel settore antartico argentino. Opera con un KW di potenza con modulazione in banda laterale superiore sulla ormai storica frequenza dei 15476 KHz dopo un primo periodo durante il quale era possibile ascoltarla sui 6030 KHz.  Le basi antartiche di altre nazioni hanno solo emittenti "locali" in banda FM come puntualmente riportato dal WRTH. L'intento di questa emittente è fondamentalmente quello di far sapere al mondo che gli argentini sono li e che intendono restarci. L'avvicendamento del personale, ovviamente, segue la rotazione dei duri turni di lavoro che caratterizzano le attività della base. Il personale destinato all'attività radiofonica viene preventivamente formato presso l'Istituto Superiore di Educazione Radiofonica (ISER). Difficile ma non impossibile ascoltare il segnale di questa stazione. Propagazione e orari di trasmissione sono elementi decisivi per l'ascolto e per diverso tempo è stato praticamente impossibile ascoltare LRA36 in Europa proprio per gli orari di trasmissione incompatibili con la nostra situazione geografica. Da qualche tempo, anche con l'utilizzo dei social per promuovere le proprie trasmissioni, la radio antartica cerca di coinvolgere il pubblico europeo trasmettendo in orari più adatti all'ascolto nel nostro continente. 

Già qualche settimana fa si erano avute diverse segnalazioni di ascolto sia in Italia che in Europa e ieri sera a partire dalle 21 UTC anche io sono riuscito ad ascoltare il debole segnale dal sud del mondo. E' stata la terza volta in assoluto che ho ascoltato questa stazione, della prima ho anche la testimonianza di una QSL tipo diploma ricevuta 18 anni fa con un segnale decisamente più forte, forse in virtù del fatto che allora i KW in gioco erano 10. Il segnale ascoltato ieri era tutt'altro che forte, tuttavia è stato costantemente presente sui 19 metri per quasi tutte e due le  ore di trasmissione programmate fatta eccezione per 15 minuti dalle 21.30 alle 21.45 non saprei dire se per chiusura temporanea della propagazione o per interruzione della trasmissione. Vi proponiamo alcuni estratti audio e video della serata radio-antartica di ieri. Il video è relativo ai primi minuti di ascolto con audio decisamente scarso, mentre la registrazione è l'estratto su 50 minuti di ascolto della seconda ora di trasmissione con un segnale leggermente migliore.

Since 1979 LRA36 RADIO NACIONAL "ARCANGEL SAN GABRIEL" has been making its voice heard from the Esperanza base in the Argentine Antarctic sector. It operates with a KW of power with upper sideband modulation on the now historic frequency of 15476 KHz after an initial period during which it was possible to listen to it on 6030 KHz. The Antarctic bases of other nations have only "local" broadcasters in the FM band as punctually reported by WRTH. The intent of this broadcaster is basically to let the world know that the Argentines are there and intend to stay there. The turnover of personnel obviously follows the rotation of the hard work shifts that characterize the activities of the base. The personnel assigned to the radio activity are previously trained at the Higher Institute of Radio Education (ISER). Difficult but not impossible to hear the signal of this station. Propagation and transmission times are decisive elements for listening and for some time it was practically impossible to listen to LRA36 in Europe due to the transmission times incompatible with our geographical situation. For some time now, also with the use of social media to promote its broadcasts, Antarctic radio has been trying to involve the European public by broadcasting at times more suitable for listening on our continent.

Already a few weeks ago there had been several signals of listening both in Italy and in Europe and yesterday evening starting from 21 UTC I too managed to listen to the weak signal from the southern hemisphere. It was the third time ever that I listened to this station, of the first I also have the testimony of a diploma-type QSL received 18 years ago with a decidedly stronger signal, perhaps due to the fact that then the KW involved were 10. The signal listened to yesterday was anything but strong, however it was constantly present on 19 meters for almost all two hours of programmed transmission except for 15 minutes from 9.30pm to 9.45pm I don't know if due to temporary propagation closure or interruption of the transmission. We offer you some audio and video excerpts from yesterday's radio-Antarctic evening. The video relates to the first few minutes of listening with decidedly poor audio, while the recording is the extract from 50 minutes of listening to the second hour of broadcasting with a slightly better signal.
