Per oltre mezzo secolo Berlino è stata il crocevia di tutti i principali attori della guerra fredda. Fino al suo crollo fisico e metaforico il muro che divideva la città è stato il muto testimone di drammi politici militari, economici e naturalmente di tutte le forme di spionaggio concepite dai servizi di intellgence dei due bloccchi. Dopo la riunificazione le strutture realizzate per lo spionaggio sono state dismesse e abbandonate, le più imponenti rimangono come testimonianza di questo drammatico periodo storico.
Nel centro della foresta di Grunewald c'è quella che è
stata chiamata "Montagna del diavolo", Teufelsberg, una collina
artificiale di oltre 120 metri di altezza realizzata con milioni di
metri cubi di macerie derivanti dai bombardamenti della città nel corso
della seconda guerra mondiale. Sulla sommità di questa collina nel 1961
gli alleati iniziarono il posizionamento di strutture radio mobili,
mentre a partire dal 1963 venne costruita una stazione di ascolto
destinata all'intercettazione delle comunicazioni della Repubblica
Democratica Tedesca e del Patto di Varsavia.
A gestire la postazione era la US National Security
Agency (NSA) e veniva definita dai militari americani "The hill", la
collina oppure "T'Berg". All'interno della struttura, priva di finestre
per evitare che si potesse osservare dall'esterno l'attività che vi si
svolgeva, lavoravano 1500 militari che venivano prelevati nei loro
alloggi da bus navetta e depositati direttamente all'interno della
struttura. Il radar principale si trovava all'interno di una torre di
quasi 70 metri di altezza e aveva un raggio di azione di circa 600 Km.
La stazione radio era circondata da tre ordini di muri in cemento armato
e filo spinato per evitare infiltrazioni dall'est.
Il sito fu abbandonato nel 1992 e da allora l'area è in
pieno degrado. I vari progetti di riqualificazione o di cambio di
destinazione urbanistica non sono mai andati a buon fine e da diversi
anni le pareti degli imponenti edifici, in parte crollate, sono
diventate le "tavolozze" dei graffitari berlinesi. Nel 2013 alcuni
veterani dell'esercito americano che hanno prestato servizio sulla
"Montagna del divolo" hanno commemorato il 50o anniversario della
stazione di ascolto realizzando anche una targa ricordo.
Diversi i turisti che si avventurano "clandestinamente"
sulla collina scavalcando muri e recinzioni sfidando i pericoli di
un'area dismessa e ormai priva di protezioni, mentre un'associazione no
profit organizza nei fine settimana delle più tranquille e sicure
escursioni guidate per coloro che vogliono rivivere le atmosfere della
guerra fredda. Sulla rete esistono numerose testimonianze fotografiche

fencing, challenging the dangers of a disused and now defenseless area,
while a nonprofit association organizes on weekends the quietest and
