On Thursday 5 January starting at 8.25 UTC, Vatican Radio will also broadcast live on shortwave the funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
Transmissions from the Santa Maria Galeria site directed towards Africa will have the following format:
17790 KHz with Arabic commentary
15565 KHz with French commentary
17525 KHz with English commentary
17510 KHz with Portuguese commentary

So, in other words, for most of the world, 'sorry, you can't hear this'.
I'd love to be able to listen and/or record this but those frequencies aren't going to make it to North America!
The administrative management of Vatican Radio had already intended to abandon shortwave several years ago. It was the current Pope who wanted to maintain the service, limiting it however to the less technologically advanced areas of the planet, where the radio is the only way to get the Vatican's voice across. For this reason, the target is Africa and the Middle East. I think that after this Pope the shortwave service will really be shut down.
I am sure you are correct about the 'intent' of the administrative side of things, but I STILL don't understand why/how broadcasters expect to maintain an audience if they don't actually BROADCAST.
Isn't it obvious by now that 'the internet' is not a replacement for SW Broadcasting in ANY location? I'd love to see data (not just 'everyone knows' but actual data!) that suggests I'm wrong, but I've not yet, despite asking for it for going on 20 years now.
