AUDIOCLIP, URBI ET ORBI CHRISTMAS BLESSING 2020 VIA VATICAN RADIO 17805 KHz

As is traditional this year, on the occasion of Christmas, the Pope gave the solemn blessing "Urbi et orbi". St. Peter's Square, the traditional Christmas morning meeting place for the faithful of the city, pilgrims and visitors to the city, was sadly empty due to the anti-covid measures adopted by the authorities and the ceremony took place inside the blessing room , located above the portico of San Pietro. The ceremony, through the Vatican News circuit, was broadcast all over the world on TV and radio connected to the event. Vatican radio also broadcast the ceremony through the short waves of the Santa Maria Galeria broadcasting site with comments in various languages as per the schedule released in recent days. We recorded the entire ceremony, which lasted less than half an hour, on the frequency of 17805 KHz, a frequency intended for listening in Africa, with simultaneous translation and commentary in Portuguese.

AUDIOCLIP CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM QUEEN ELIZABETH TO THE COMMONWEALTH VIA BBC R4 AND BBC WS

On the third stroke of Big Ben, at 3pm GMT, BBC Radio 4 aired Queen Elizabeth's customary Christmas message to the Commonwealth. Six minutes later the BBC World Service relayed the message via the Kranji-Singapore relay to Asia and Oceania. Obviously the message was relayed on TV, through the satellite network and the internet, but we radio fans could not miss the opportunity to follow this event through our favorite means of communication and here is the same message recorded both on long waves. of the 198 KHz and on the short wave of 7485 KHz.

AUDIOCLIP, NDR, SPECIAL CHRISTMAS TRANSMISSION ON SHORTWAVES, 6030 KHz

Also this year the NDR has broadcast in short wave the usual program "greetings on board" for the German sea workers who for reasons of service are away from their motherland during the holiday season. The emission took place on different frequencies in short waves. The clip relates to the beginning of the broadcasts at 19 UTC on the frequency of 6030 KHz.

AUDIOCLIP, CHRISTMAS EVE CELEBRATION WITH ADESTE FIDELES ON BBC RADIO 4 198 KHz

Christmas Eve celebrations also across the Channel. BBC Radio 4 broadcast a liturgical celebration yesterday afternoon. Unmissable is the performance of "O Come All Ye Faithful" usually sung in Latin and known as "Adeste fideles". The clip was recorded on the frequency of 198 KHz, which in the winter season allows good listening almost 24 hours a day even in Central Italy.

AUDIOCLIP, VATICAN RADIO, CHRISTMAS EVE CELEBRATIONS ON SHORWAVES

As every year, Vatican Radio is dedicating a series of special shortwave broadcasts to the celebrations of Holy Christmas. Last night's Eve Mass, celebrated earlier than the tradition, to comply with anti-covid rules, was broadcast on shortwave with commentary in various languages, including French. The clip was recorded on the frequency of 7305 KHz and contains the moment of the Eucharistic consecration and the end of the celebration with the "ite missa est". We would also have liked to let you listen to the beautiful choral performance of "Tu scendi dalle stelle", but as you hear, the commentator's voice is superimposed on the performance and at the end the carrier of Radio China International, usually intrusive and irritating, which has covered the last few minutes of the broadcast.

Today the German civilian radio is 100 years old. On December 22, 1920, a live music and poetry program was broadcast from a former military station. Until then, the use of the radio had only been radio-telegraphic and intended for military purposes. All German radio stations give ample prominence to the important anniversary with special broadcasts that recall this important event. Just to give an example, the BR broadcast for an hour as if it were the year 1920, with live musical performances with acoustic instruments and presenters in period dress as shown in the photo taken from the Bavarian radio website. Another live concert was performed on the site of the first broadcast, while the reconstruction of the events leading up to the first broadcast is taken from the MDR site. The 100 years of Radio logo is taken from the Radioeins website.

On the Mühlenberg in Königs Wusterhausen, where the Deutsche Reichspost operated its main radio station, there was a lot of activity two days before Christmas Eve. Already in the afternoon a harmonium had been hauled up the hill. In the early evening several men followed with cases of musical instruments. Six enthusiasts were preparing for an apparition. For the first time, an instrumental concert was to be broadcast this evening on the long-wave transmission shaft located on the hill. Before that, radio technology was only used for military purposes or Morse signs were being broadcast. Civilians were forbidden to listen to the radio. For this reason, very few listeners listened to the media-technical revolution that took place on 22 December 1920 at the main radio station of the Deutsche Reichspost on the Funkerberg in Königs Wusterhausen. This broadcast is considered the birth of the German broadcast.

For an hour, the amateur musicians, officials of the Deutsche Reichspost, played music. Senior technician Erich Schwarzkopf sat right next to a five kilowatt arc transmitter. For sound insulation, the room was designed with sleeping blankets from the military warehouse. The cello and clarinet-playing postal officials would also be ready, but broadcasting a combination of many instruments caused difficulties due to acoustic couplings early in the broadcast. Therefore, he played only the violin played by Schwarzkopf, a harmonium and vocal voices, which performed "Silent Night" and other Christmas songs. Poems were also read and greetings were given. Music and speech - the typical radio mix was already 100 years ago. The radio technicians made sure that the "Christmas concert" could also be heard. The Reichspost station had several broadcasting posts, which had been used by the army until 1919. Although there was no radio and reception was only possible via appropriate telegraph receivers with headphones, the concert was followed at official receiving stations. . Technically, everything worked and was very popular, even abroad, as later letters from Luxembourg, Holland, England and the Nordic countries confirmed. Similar performances followed in the following months.

AFTER 56 YEARS RADIO CAROLINE WILL BROADCAST THE QUEEN'S CHRISTMAS SPEECH ON 648 KHz

Radio Caroline is to broadcast Queen's Christmas Message on Christmas Day - 56 years after being turned down for being an unauthorized broadcaster.

On 1st December 1964, David Block, Caroline's former publicity officer, contacted the BBC to request a copy of the Queen's Christmas message. He was told that, despite Caroline having more than 12 million listeners, his request could not be taken seriously because Caroline was a pirate radio station, and to come back 'if and when' he could provide 'evidence of credentials as representative of an authorized broadcaster '.

Radio Caroline has been an authorized broadcaster since 22nd December 2017, when we took over and returned to use the abandoned BBC World Service transmission facilities at Orfordness on the Suffolk coast. We again applied for permission to broadcast the Queen's Christmas message this year - and this time approval was granted.

"Fifty-six years is a long wait, but we are very pleased to now be able to transmit the Queen's Christmas Message." Said station manager Peter Moore. "This will be heard on 648 AM in the South East, on DAB in various towns and cities and globally via the Internet, where we have time shifted the message for East and West Coast US. "

(by Tiziano Rapanà) How do you tell the story of an innovation? There is no manual for this purpose. You have to improvise, with the risk of making mistakes. We must avoid mortifying an important story: we must protect it from the pompous rhetoric and also from the demon of disappointment that always creeps there, around the corner, when the cantors of revisionism want to orchestrate their procession. A group of professionals, a pool led by Giampiero Vigorito, fortunately narrated the birth and growth of a moment of innovation in Italian radio without missing a beat. And it was not obvious in this florilege of stories, analyzes, explanations of a complex phenomenon like Raistereonotte, do not make mistakes. Because there was the risk of writing jarring scores, of building a useless book that at best would have titillated the taste buds of the most avid fans with frivolous anecdotes. Here there is no complete view, some would say 360 degrees, of a historic monument. The book also collects curiosities, background and testimonies of historical collaborators who have alternated for 14 years at the microphones of the program broadcast live from the studios in via Po 14 in Rome, but there is not only this. The book will make you understand the phenomenon and illustrate the changes it has generated and above all it will tell you what social changes it is the child of, because if there hadn't been a cultural revolution in the seventies we would not have had Raistereonotte. In the book you will read the texts by Ernesto Assante, Marco Boccitto, Stefano Bonaugura, Giuseppe Carboni, Alberto Castelli, Massimo Cotto, Carlo De Blasio, Teresa De Santis, Stefano Mannucci, Enrico Sisti, Fabrizio Stramacci and many others (they are many and I will not mention them all). Congratulations to Vigorito, the soul of Raistereonotte and the book. The curator spared the unnecessary celebration to create something solid, to be read and studied in universities. I recommend the book to communication students and to those who want to understand something more of the history of our local radio. I recommend, from next week, everyone in the bookstore to buy Raistereonotte - The book (Iacobelli editore, 2020).

Hundreds of thousands of sailors cannot leave ships at due to the Corona pandemic or they are unable to return to their ships. The greeting on board is also a signal of how many people are with the sailors with their thoughts and wishes.

AUDIOCLIP, RADIO INTER, 918 KHz, BACK ON THE MEDIUM WAVES

Three years ago, the deactivation of the powerful Ljubljana station on 918 KHz left the field free to the Spanish Radio Inter, the historic Madrid broadcaster which, however, last year, in turn, had left the medium waves. It seemed the umpteenth final farewell of a radio station to this broadcasting band, but yesterday Radio Inter returned to 918 KHz, an event promptly reported on social groups by Spanish dxers. The clip we propose was recorded shortly after midnight, Italian time. Compared to the past, the signal seems weaker to me. It would be interesting to know the actual power used for transmissions.

QSL FROM RNE RADIO CLASICA, EMISIÓN DE ANOMALÍA EN ONDAS MEDIAS 1314 KHz ...

JOSE ANTONIO GARCIA MERINO

Estimado Francesco:

Programa            Frecuencia (KHz)    Centro Emisor           Fecha       Hora ( UTC )

Radio Clásica          1314          Reus, Tarragona         29/11/2020     05:50 a 06:00

RMC ON LONG WAVES, THE MYSTERY SOLVED

The superpower transmitter of Roumoules used until a few months ago by Radio Monte Carlo on the long wave of 216 KHz could have a future with the DRM transmission system. This, briefly, is what emerged after an exchange of emails between the French right-wing Christian Ghibaudo and Mr. Pennella, one of the technical managers of the Monegasque broadcaster's website. As our readers will remember, a couple of days ago we talked about the strange reappearance of the broadcasts of RMC-Info Talk sport on long waves detected by Giroletti from Milan and myself on November 24th. His friend Christian, a profound connoisseur of the Monegasque reality, immediately contacted the managers of the broadcaster to discover the origin of these broadcasts. From Mr. Pennella he learned that it was a simulcast transmission test lasting 10 minutes with a power of "only" 400 KW in view of using the site with the DRM system. For this reason the broadcaster's technical managers seem intent on involving radio listening enthusiasts who are able to listen to the radio with this system.

The longwave transmitter at Roumoules, which was inaugurated in 1974, transmits at 216 kHz (until 1988: 218 kHz) with a transmission power of 1400 kW (until 1976: 2000 kW). It consists of two 1000 kW transmitters switched in parallel, which are however run with 700 kW output power. A third 1000 kW unit has been available since 1983. Although this unit is only used as backup unit, it is possible to switch all three units in parallel, which would allow an operation with a transmission power of 3000 kW. Since the 31st of March 2020 the transmitter has ceased transmitting the French program of Radio Monte Carlo but remains available for contract use.
The longwave transmitter uses a directional aerial with a maximum strength pointing northwest (azimuth: 309 °). It consists of three 300-meter (980 ft) -high guyed masts, which are insulated against ground and ground-fed. As a backup a 330-meter (1,080 ft) -high guyed, ground-fed lattice steel mast radiator is available on the site, which only allows an omnidirectional radiation pattern.
The grounding system of the long wave transmitter is very large. The total length of all wires of the grounding system is 200 kilometers (100 mi), covering an area of 150 hectares (370 acres). Because the area around the mast is used for agriculture, the ground wires are laid to a depth of 80 centimeters (31 in).

SHORT AND MYSTERIOUS RE-APPEARANCE OF RMC ON 216 KHz (NOV. 24, 2020)

On the evening of November 24, around 17.30 UTC, the Milanese dx-er Mauro Giroletti signaled the presence of the RMC info Talk Sport signal on the historic long wave frequency of 216 KHz which has now been closed for several months. It was not a continuous emission but a series of on-offs on this frequency. I tuned myself to 216 KHz and recorded this audio clip of the broadcast which finally ceased after about a minute. Quite robust signal with a 9 + 20 on the S-meter. Other reports have not arrived and this little mystery remains about the brief reappearance of RMC on long waves.

AUDIOCLIP, THE CAUCASIAN WAVES OF ADYGEYAN RADIO FROM KRASNODAR, 6000 KHz

Thanks to the powerful Krasnodar transmitter operating at 6000 KHz with 100 kilowatts of power, the broadcast of the National Radio of the Republic of Adygea, one of the many administrative entities in which the vast Russian Federation, located in the south of the country is divided, in the Caucasus region. After the Russian Federation has suppressed almost all the emissions on medium and short wave, listening to this station is one of the few opportunities for listening to radio broadcasts from its territory.  Adygea Radio broadcasts three times a week, always on the 6000 KHz frequency. Sundays at 19.00 UTC on Mondays and Fridays at 18.00. The broadcasts are in the local language with Arabic and Turkish inserts in the Monday broadcast. In the audio clip the start of the broadcast on Friday 11 December 2020

BROKEN THE RADIO VERDAD SHORT WAVES TRANSMITTER

Web
.

Guatemala - Dear Friends of Radio Verdad:

Radio Verdad's Omnitronix 1000 transmitter burned down on December 5, 2020, at 10:00 am. Both power modules burned out, so Radio Truth has been off the air ever since.
We already repaired Module 'A', and I went to test it. It worked fine for five minutes, and then a fuse blew. We plan to review it tomorrow.
Module 'B' has a card with a burned area on the printed circuit. We might need a new card, or rebuild the old card.
So that's why we are off the air on short wave.
However, we are on the air through our Website.

AUDIOCLIP, LUCKY IDENTIFICATION OF RADIO CAROLINE 648 KHz DURING A SHORT BREAK OF MURSKI VAL

Listening to Radio Caroline with its power KW in my area is very difficult, transmitting the well-known British station in isofrequency with the much more powerful Radio Murski Val from Slovenia. In fact, since the beginning of the transmissions on 648 KHz I had never heard of this station and the only feedback I had was thanks to the annual relay by Manx Radio on the easier frequency of 1368 KHz for years now free from stations Italian. On November 9, when it was just a few minutes before our midnight, I listened to the somewhat muffled but perfectly decipherable sound of John Lennon's "Working class hero". In those minutes Radio Murski Val was not broadcasting anything and there was only a silent carrier on the channel that allowed easy listening to Radio Caroline. At the end of the song, just long enough for an identification announcement, Murski Val started broadcasting again, covering everything as usual. Five seconds ago and this clip wouldn't have been there. :-)
