Il "Festival of nine lessons and Carols" è un tradizionale servizio religioso della vigilia di Natale strutturato in riflessioni tratte dalle sacre scritture (le lezioni) a cura di ecclesiastici e rappresntanti della città di Cambridge e il suggestivo accompagnamento musicale del coro del King's College di Cambridge che esegue tutti i canti della tradizione natalizia anglosassone. Nato negli ultimi anni del XIX secolo il servizio è stato codificato nel 1918 e da allora si svolge annualmente senza sostanziali variazioni. La BBC ha iniziato a trasmetterlo nel 1928, sia per le isole britanniche che per le colonie, non interrompendo questa consuetudine nemmeno nel periodo bellico. Le "nine lessons" sono uno degli eventi più attesi e suguiti della BBC che le trasmette in diretta nel pomeriggio della vigilia di Natale attraverso RADIO 4 e in differita il giorno di Natale attraverso il network di RADIO 3. Come di consueto abbiamo registrato gli ultimi minuti di trasmissione sulle onde lunghe dei 198 KHz di Droitwich e con questa bellissima musica che comprende l'Adeste fideles e l'inno "Hark ! The "Festival of nine lessons and Carols" is a traditional Christmas Eve religious service structured in religious reflections (the lessons) by religious and representatives of the city of Cambridge and the evocative musical accompaniment of the King's College Cambridge choir performing all the songs of the Anglo-Saxon Christmas tradition.
